The title refers to a combination of the words melody and malody, the record inspired by the songwriter’s turbulent past - Hyde was diagnosed with bipolar disorder in 2011 after a severe breakdown spanning 2010-13. I know about these things as I am bipolar. Last week saw the release of Malody, the new solo album from Barry Hyde, former frontman of noughties indie staples the Futureheads. A ‘malody’ is a melody that expresses mental malaise, mental illness and deep sadness or its opposite, mania. The lead singer/guitarist’s self-financed debut solo offering, which he says has been influenced by his bipolar on the album’s PledgeMusic page, will be called Malody, and will be available on June 3 via Sirenspire Records.ĭiscussing the unusual album title, Hyde said: “What is ‘malody’? In addition Barry is offering bespoke songs, improvisations, music lessons and ‘made to order’ piano and orchestral versions of Futureheads songs of your own choice. ‘Malody’ is available to pre-order on CD, vinyl and download via Pledge Music.
